Here is another project that pretty much defined my time at the Seahawks - prior to every home game we would have a segment where a select individual would raise our 12 Flag. In 2022, I got the chance to remodel that sequence, alongside our video department.
The process started out with a simple cloth simulation, recreated by taking photos of a 12 Flag and animating inside of Houdini. I ran a couple of simple tests first to make sure the material would be right in all types of lighting, in case we wanted to use the flag for something else.
Next up was modeling a mountain that would represent Mount Rainer. I actually made the mountain for this project from scratch using World Creator, but for another project I went and got actual LIDAR data to get a more realistic result.
And the rest was simply using these two elements, the flag and the mountain, to build out a motion graphics template for our editors to use and swap in images of the chosen flag raiser!
